It is with great sadness that IBCI report the death of Philip O Brien on 22nd March
2024.
Philip was a dear friend to everyone in the Irish Building Control Institute. All who
knew him found him to be a conscientious, kind and most honorable person and he
was highly valued and will be greatly missed by all at the Institution and everyone
who knew him.
Philip served on Council of the Irish Building Control Institute for approx. 25 years.
In that time, he served as Member, Vice-President and was President on 6
occasions. He was an integral part of policy decision making and on Conference
Committee for 20 plus Annual Conferences. His input was huge for all these Events
and particularly in dealing with the many IT issues that crop up during the
Conference. He was a key part of Committee who produced an IBCI position paper
on Building Control in the early noughties. He was expert on compliance with Council
Bye Laws.
Philip also represented IBCI on the Consortium for European Building Control
(CEBC) for many years. He was elected to the prestigious position of Vice President
of the CEBC in 2021 and served in this position until his untimely passing. He was
greatly respected by all his European colleagues in the CEBC. He continued to
contribute on-line by Teams right up to his passing.
IBCI Council, Members and all its friends and colleagues pass on our deepest
sympathies to Philip’s wife Brenda, son David, his partner Cat and grand-child
Ronan , his daughter Emma, and all the extended O Brien Family.
